I am on leave during the 2005-06 academic year. I have a Fulbright Fellowship to Taiwan and am teaching at Tamkang University, Danshui, Taipei in the Graduate Institute for American Studies.

I am continuing my research and writing regarding the "Paper War," the early nineteenth-century Transatlantic war of words between British travelers/reviewers and American writers. The relatively forgotten episodes that comprised the Paper War help to illuminate the dilemmas facing establishment Britain as well as the development of American literary nationalism.

My course teaching load this academic year includes graduate courses (conducted in English) on "How Others See America: A History of Foreign Commentary on America," "Making of American Nationalism," "American Founders and Their European Connections," and "Tocqueville's America."

Please feel free to contact me by e-mail (wjeaton@yahoo.com or wjeaton@stgregorys.edu) or at the TKU department mailing address:
