St. Gregory's University Syllabus Course Description: This course is designed to prepare students to succeed in college and to formulate and carry out a Life Development Plan. Major components include: learning to use a laptop computer and local area network, investigating academic and career choices, acquiring effective study habits, using the resources of the library and resource center, preparing for examinations, and developing a positive self-image. Mission Statement: The Foundations course guides students in discovering who they are, what they want, and how they will get there. Instructor's Statement: Phone: ext. 5141 (temporary) e-mail: skwalck@sgc.edu Office is also open to students at other times when instructor is
present in office. Supplies: Students will need a journal notebook of their choosing. A computer disk will be needed in class for use on laptop. Students will receive a supplies voucher/coupon when purchasing their textbook in Founder's Bookstore. Students will then turn the voucher into the instructor and appropriate supplies will be handed out in class. Instructor and University Policies: Attendance is a vital
component of this class and is given considerable weight in grading
criteria. Most class assignments and course requirements cannot be
accomplished without attendance in class. Excessive (three or more)
absences will be discussed with the student and a decision about
withdrawal will be determined.

| Late, in class and out of class assignments, will not be accepted and cannot be made up. Most class activities are not designed in such a way as they could be completed outside of class. Journal assignments will not be given after class, but if students want to survey classmates for the journal assignment, they may. Class presentations must be presented as scheduled and may not be made up or scheduled on a different day. | | Academic policies including
plagiarism, ADA accommodations, withdrawal, etc., will be adhered to
as written in the university catalog and student handbook.
| The instructor reserves the
right to adjust the course outline as needed. Adjustments will be
made to the syllabus on the instructor's web page and students may
print a revised syllabus from this source if
desired.
| The instructor does not have a
problem with snacks, drinks, or gum in class, but students are asked
to dispose of their own trash.
| Course Objectives: By the end of the course the
student will manifest an understanding of who he/she is and what
he/she wants.
| By the end of the course the
student will set realistic and realizable goals for his/her personal
success in the five areas of life development (spiritual, physical,
academic, social and emotional).
| By the end of the course the
student will develop effective strategies for the achievement of
his/her success in college and in life.
| By the end of the course the
student will demonstrate the ability to be self-reflective with
regard to his/her personal values and goals.
| By the end of the course the
student will manifest an ability to organize his/her time and work.
| By the end of the course the
student will be able to work as part of a team and to function as a
member of a group.
| By the end of the course the
student will demonstrate a minimum level of competence in computer
skills.
| By the end of the course the
student will be familiar with the campus environment and available
services.
| By the end of the course the
student will have begun the process of compiling a Life Development
Portfolio.
| By the end of the course the
student will investigate how curiosity contributes to his/her
success in learning and the search for wisdom.
| By the end of the course the
student will investigate the importance of persistence and develop a
willingness to learn from mistakes.
| By the end of the course the
student will develop an understanding of the value of "Whole Brain
Thinking".
| By the end of the course the
student will develop a personal approach to physical fitness.
