French 1113-1 is designed to develop the students skills in the fundamentals of the French Language.

Purpose of course:
Beginning French is a complete, first-year college level course that teaches the four language skills: understanding, speaking, reading and writing. The goal of this course is to build the student’s ability to function in French at a basic level.

Mission statement:

He will be more aware of the global community of nations and their relationships to each other. The student will also see how he is part of a divine plan to love and serve one another despite cultural and linguistic differences.

Course objectives:
At the end of the semester the student should be able:

1. To greet people, ask directions, cope with everyday needs, give basic information about himself, talk about his interests, his family and his studies.

2. To understand and help French-speaking visitors in this country.

3. To know basic grammar and the core vocabulary of French.

4. To read French texts (easy or moderate level of difficulty).

Required Textbooks:

 Course requirements:

  1. Class attendance: Attendance will be checked each class. Absences are really not encouraged! A warning will be sent to the student if the absences total more than the number of class meetings per week, indeed, the student may be dropped from the class for excessive absence. Absences caused by participation in University-sponsored activities, by illness or certain other unavoidable emergencies may be excused.
  2. Exams: The exams (written and oral) must be completed in order to pass the course. Exams begin promptly. Normally, no absences are allowed on tests days. If a student has to miss a test because of a confirmed illness, a death in the family, or a similar emergency, he should contact the instructor immediately. He is urged to make up all homework immediately.
  3. Written work must be turned in at the beginning of the class period on the day assigned. Late work will be penalized.
  4. All daily assignments from the workbook/lab manual must be turned in on the first day back to class after an absence. Tests missed must be done within two days of the return to class. The dictee and the vocabulary test cannot be made up.
  5. Each student will use resources on Internet, in the OBU library (or even by going to French Clubs meetings at OBU) and any resources available to write cultural reports. NOTE: Plagiarism is a serious breach of academic integrity and will not be tolerated. Acts violating expected integrity include: the use of another’s published work wholly or in part without recognition or proper documentation; the use of another student’s work as his one’s own; the purchase, use or provision of an already prepared paper. Students found to have committed plagiarism will receive an F for the examination, written work or quiz in question.

6. Cultural report: The purpose of the report is to broaden students’ insights into various aspects of French culture. The student will present an oral report of approx. 5-10 minutes in class. Class members need to take note on the information presented since it will be included on tests. The report will be handed in at the beginning of class.
