Course Description:
Designed to train the intermediate/advanced level ballet dancer to master the technique of the classical ballet idiom, which provides a base for all other dance forms. Class consists of barre and center work to expand knowledge of ballet vocabulary and to develop the muscular strength and control to execute movement sequences. This class is not for the student with little or no previous training or for the student who has not taken ballet class for more than one year.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course the student will understand the proper placement of the body and classroom etiquette. Each student will know the spelling, English translation, purpose, and description of the terminology covered for a beginning/intermediate level ballet dancer.

Assessment:
The student will perform a technical proficiency exam at the beginning and the end of the semester to assess the student's improvement. The technical proficiency examinations consist of evaluations of center work. The examinations compare the student's alignment and technique from the beginning of the semester to the end. Effort and attitude are monitored throughout the semester and are considered when evaluating technical progress. Three written terminology tests will be given throughout the semester. The written examinations will include spelling, English translations, purpose, and descriptions of assigned terminology.

Attendance:
Attendance is recorded with a sign-in sheet. It is the student's responsibility to sign-in every class. A student must not sign-in for another student. The student may miss two classes per semester. Each additional absence shall result in the loss of one letter grade from the final grade. If the student is injured or not feeling well enough to dance, but well enough to attend class, an absence may be avoided by attending class and writing an evaluation of a student taking class. The student must submit the written evaluation to the instructor at the end of class to receive credit. The student should report all illnesses and/or injuries to the instructor. Three late arrivals or early departures from class are equivalent to one absence. The student should be properly dressed and ready to begin on time. It is the student's responsibility to obtain information missed due to an absence. If an exam is missed, it is the student's responsibility to arrange a make-up exam with the instructor.

Attire
Proper attire for women in ballet class includes classic leotards of any color, pink or black tights, and pink ballet shoes with hair secured away from the face and off of the neck. Men wear white t-shirts or classic leotards, men’s black tights (made with a heavy material), and black or white ballet shoes. Street clothes and extra large clothes are not permitted. The student must leave the classroom completely dressed.

Classroom Etiquette:
The student is expected to treat the instructor and fellow students with respect and courtesy in an attentive and cooperative manner. Any problems should be addressed to the instructor and/or an advisor. No smoking, gum, food, or drinks in the classroom at any time.
