        AR Independent Study: Oil Painting

Instructor: Stephen Mauldin

E-mail: slmauldin@sgc.edu

Course Description:  Designed to develop student’s skills in the art of oil painting, both technically and conceptually.

Mission Statement: This course contributes to the university’s goal of inculcating in students an appreciation for the arts and inspiring a lifelong quest for learning and personal development.  It encourages creativity and will provide the student an ongoing avenue for productive leisure and reflection.

Instructor’s Statement: I hold a Bachelor of Arts Degree, with honors, from Oklahoma City University (with a major in Art) and a Master of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Idaho (with a concentration in painting and printmaking).  I have also been an actively producing painter for twenty-six years and my work has been shown in museums and galleries from coast to coast.  My office is located inside room FA 215 and my office hours are:

·        9:30-10:30 a.m. and 1:00-2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

I also have a studio in the metal building east of the convent behind the cafeteria and can often be found there if I’m not in my office.

Course Objectives: Independent Study in Oil Painting will expand student’s mastery of oil painting with more exposure to color theory, the production of larger work, and increased emphasis on coherent bodies of work. By the end of the semester the student will be able to:

·        Understand the principles of using and mixing color;

·        Build and prepare his own canvases;

·        Conceive and execute bodies of work that are cohesive both technically and conceptually;

·        Verbalize about the ideas he is addressing in his work.

Textbook: None

Supplies: To be discussed with instructor.

·        Complete five paintings; four 24” x 30” and one 36” x 48”;

Instructor Policies:  Scheduled meetings with instructor are mandatory.  After three absences, the student may be dropped from the course.  If possible, notify instructor in advance of circumstances that will require your absence and accommodations may be called for.
