HE 2262 Exercise Testing

Course Description: This course is an introduction to health appraisals and exercise tests for the purpose of exercise prescription.  Specific assessments taught include cardio respiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, body composition, and flexibility.

Objectives: By the end of the semester the student will be able to:

Accurately test cardiovascular endurance using a variety of testing techniques Accurately test flexibility using a variety of testing techniques                              Accurately test muscular strength and muscular endurance using a variety of test Accurately test body composition using a variety of testing methods                     Convert body fat percentages to weight measurements                                      Calculate BMI and explain its relevance to health                                                    Identify and assess limitations to exercise testing                               

Textbook:  None.  Handouts will be given during the semester.

Course Requirements:

  1. Attend all classes
  2. Read assigned handouts
  3. Research origination of exercise tests using online resources
  4. Practice sessions – outside class
  5. Complete all types of exercise testing with accuracy
  6. Participate in fitness testing day at MAC

Grading Criteria:

 

A = 810 - 900 points

B = 720 – 809 points

C = 630 – 719 points

D = 540 – 629 points

F = less than 540 points

 

 

300 points Attendance (10 points per class for on time attendance, 6 points per class for tardy attendance). If you are not in class, you do not get the points. If there is a legitimate excuse for the absence you may have the opportunity to submit assignments related to the class if possible.

100 points for volunteering to help with fitness screenings at the MAC (TBA). 

500 points for various fitness exams and research projects.

 

Instructor and University Policies:

 

Attendance: I expect you to attend each class. If you should be unable to attend a class, please inform me as soon as possible. You earn 10 points for each class you attend. Failure to attend class three times will warrant an "Absence Warning." (Note that while you are encouraged to explain a necessary absence, I do not distinguish between "excused" and "unexcused" absences for points or for the warning.)

Plagiarism: is a grave error. Each student is expected to do his/her own work and to respect the work of others by use of appropriate documentation. A student guilty of plagiarism will receive, as a minimum, a failing grade for the assignment.

ADA: Requests from individuals with disabilities for accommodations necessary for access to campus events, programs, and services should be made in advance by contacting the Americans with Disabilities Act Coordinator at 878-5152.

Outline: The outline for this course is subject to change. After discussion with the students enrolled, the instructor reserves the right to modify the outline. It is a "work in progress" throughout the semester.

Classroom etiquette: Please remove hats during class times. Please refrain from use of food, drink (water is okay), tobacco products, cell phones or pagers during class time. Be prepared to actively participate in class discussions and team/cooperative projects.  If you are going to be absent from class, please take full responsibility for making arrangements for make-up work.  Bring necessary materials to each class meeting unless otherwise instructed.  Turn all assignments in on time.  Please act appropriately and respectfully toward the instructor and other members of the class.

Beginning and ending assessment:  Students will complete an assessment exam at the beginning and end of the semester to measure to measure progress.
