Poetry Study and Presentation: A Collaborative Project

Begin by reading all of the poems in the text (or handouts) for the poet your group will study. As you read, take notes about the topics and themes expressed, the poetic form and techniques used, and your reactions to the poems.

First group meeting: Compare your notes on the poems read. Plan the roles of the members of your group. You may opt to do all of the sections together. Certainly, however, the entire group should compare results and provide feedback.

Components of the project:

Summary of the author’s work, including topics and themes. This is based upon your reading of the author’s work.
Analysis of the techniques used by the author: form, rhythm, sound, imagery, poetic devices.
Reading of one or more of the author’s poems. (Practice the reading!)
Original poem(s) that imitate the author’s work. Without "ruining" your original piece, use it to discuss the author’s style.
Commentary gathered from those who have written about the author and his/her work
Group response to: Why read this author?

Presentation:

Include all of the required components.
Consider using music to set the tone for your presentation. This should embellish the presentation and effectively mirror the author’s work.
Consider using technology in your presentation. If you use PowerPoint, be sure to create slides that limit the amount of material on each page and that use special effects appropriately.
Consider using artwork to coincide with the topics and themes of the poems you will be presenting. Visual presentations can communicate objectives to your audience.
Create a twenty minute presentation. Practice the presentation, attentive to the time involved.
